In 1885 Massailand was scrambled by Colonial powers. Maasailand, before colonialism, covered a sizable territory that spanned from northern Kenya to the steppes of northern Tanzania. The continent of Africa was divided into many colonies in the late nineteenth century as European imperial powers competed for territorial possessions on the continent. An international border between British Kenya and German Tanganyika split Maasailand in half in 1885. Elders and warriors were the two social groups that made up Maasai society. The elders served as the ruling body, convening in councils on a regular basis to make decisions about the community's affairs and resolve conflicts. The younger individuals made up the warriors, who were mostly in charge of guarding the tribe. They planned cattle raids and guarded the neighborhood. In a society where livestock represented wealth, scavenging was vital.
