Detailed Solution

Sati Pratha was banned in 1829.
The Hindu custom of burning a woman over her husband's funeral pyre was known as Sati. Sati Pratha was one of many social ills that Raja Rammohan Roy, a prominent Hindu reformer from Bengal, battled against in the Hindu community. Raja Rammohan Roy was a vocal opponent of Sati. He contended that neither the Vedas nor other early Hindu literature supported Sati. In his publication Sambad Kaumudi, he published essays arguing for banning the Pratha. In 1828, Lord William Bentinck was appointed Governor-General of India. He enacted the rule outlawing Sati throughout the Company's purview in British India in 1829.
