It was in 1976 that the 42nd amendment was made to the Indian Constitution.
The 42nd amendment added three new words to the Preamble of the Constitution of India. One of these words was ‘secular’. A secular country does not have any religion of the state. Secularism refers to the separation of religion from the matters and affairs of the state. Since India is a secular country with no state religion, it was specified in the Constitution by this amendment. The 42nd amendment brought many changes to the Constitution, and this is why it is also called a “mini Constitution”.
