In 1855, at Rishra, the first jute factory was set up on the banks of the river Hooghly in Bengal. The jute spinning medium was brought by Geroge Acland from Dundee. After four years of the first jute mill being set up, in 1859, the first power-driven jute mill was set up. Jute was at the forefront of the golden fibre revolution. Kolkata was the best place to set up a jute mill as the nearby areas had the raw materials for producing jute.
