In 1864, Brandis established the Indian Forest Service. Dietrich Brandis, a German expert and the first Inspector General of Forests in India, felt the need for a proper system to manage the forests and train people in the science of conservation. As a result, Brandis established the Indian Forest Service and assisted in drafting the Indian Forest Act of 1865. In 1906, the Imperial Forest Research Institute was established in Dehradun to teach scientific forestry.
