In 1956 the report of the State Reorganization Commission (SRC) was implemented.
The SRC was constituted by the Government of India in 1953. It had Justice Fazal Ali, K.M. Panikkar and H.N. Kunzru as its members. The commission was organised to suggest the base for the division of states in the country and the reorganisation of their boundaries. Fazal Ali was the chairman of the State Reorganisation Commission and so it is also called the Fazal Ali Commission. It gave its report which gave guidelines for the reorganisation of the then-existing 16 states and 3 union territories on a linguistic basis.
