The rich Rheinland of Germany was taken over by the Allied armies in 1920. This region was rich in resources and important to the German economy. The taking over of this resource-rich Rhineland by Germany was a result of the Treaty of Versailles. Germans and many scholars argue this treaty was very harsh and humiliating for Germany. Some German people even blamed losing the Rhineland on the newly formed Weimar Republic. They held the Weimar Republic responsible for the defeat of Germany in the First World War and the disgrace and humiliation faced by Germany at Versailles post-war.
