Detailed Solution

The Vernacular Press Act was passed in India in 1878 by Lord Lytton.
This law did not apply to English-language publications since it was intended to suppress Indian subversive writing that opposed British policies in India. Thus, the British made several accusations against press freedom to censor Indian publications. For the British to suppress the resistance to their policies in India, the legislation gave the government the authority to monitor vernacular newspapers that were mainly writing against them.
