Detailed Solution

The Corn laws were scrapped by the British government in 1846.
Under these laws, the government restricted the import of corn. After the Corn Laws were lifted, it became cheaper to import food into Britain than it was to manufacture it there. Agriculture in Britain was unable to compete with imports. Numerous vast tracts of land were left uncultivated, and thousands of men and women lost their jobs. They relocated overseas or flocked to urban areas.
