In 1968, the Olympics were held in Mexico City. The medal ceremony for the 200-meter dash was held at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos are both African-Americans. They earned gold and bronze medals in their respective events. They accepted their medals while wearing black socks and no shoes to symbolise black poverty. With this gesture, they were aiming to draw international attention to racial inequity in the United States. The clenched fists and black-gloved hands were intended to symbolise Black Power.
