From 1930-1933 Russia faced one of the most devastating famines in soviet history.
Beginning in 1929, the Party mandated that all peasants work on communal farms. The majority of the land and equipment were given to community farms. Peasants farmed the land. There were one-third fewer cattle between 1929 and 1931. Those who opposed collectivisation faced harsh penalties. Peasants stated they weren't rich and weren't opposed to socialism as they rejected collectivisation. For some reason, they did not want to work on collective farms. Stalin's regime permitted some autonomous farming but did not show these farmers any courtesy. Although collectivisation occurred, production did not instantly rise. The poor harvests of 1930–1933 caused one of the worst famines in Soviet history, which resulted in the deaths of over 4 million people.
