Biomagnifi cation is the process by which the concentration of a toxicant increases at successive trophic levels. This occurs in the case of non-biodegradable pollutants, since they cannot be degraded by the
organisms and keep on accumulating in the body of the organism throughout its life. When one organism eats another, the toxicant accumulates in the tissues of the predator and becomes more concentrated
than in the prey. This process continues up the food chain, resulting in higher concentrations of the toxicant in apex predators.
