Indentured labour was also called bonded labour, under contract for a specific amount of time, to pay off his passage to a new country. It was instituted following the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire in 1833 as newly free men and women refused to work for low wages on sugar and tea plantations. Indians were recruited and transported to many countries in Asia. The reasons were Industrial demand, the end of slavery, availability of labour, and escape from poverty for the labourers.
