India became independent in August 1947. It faced a variety of major challenges. As a result of Partition, 8 million refugees from what was then Pakistan entered the country. These people needed to find housing and jobs. In 1947, India had a population of nearly 345 million people. It was also split. There were divisions between high and low castes and between the majority Hindu community and Indians of other faiths. The people of this vast land spoke many languages, dressed in various styles, ate various foods, and worked in various occupations.
