The number of parties competing for power in elections varies among countries. Some follow the one-party system, two-party system, or multi-party system. India is a multi-party system, where many national, state, and regional parties exist. More than 750 parties are registered with the Election Commission of India. In the multi-party system, the government is formed by a coalition. Several parties come together and ally to contest the elections, known as an alliance or a front. There were three major alliances in the 2004 elections- the National Democratic Alliance, the United Progressive Alliance, and the Left Front. This system allows the representation of multiple interests and opinions.
