Q.

India is a multi-religious, multi-lingual, multi-racial, and multi-cultural society. Religious minorities constitute roughly 20% of India’s population, out of which Muslims account for 14.2%. No society can prosper or be at peace if 20% of the population feels threatened, deprived, neglected and unwanted. In multiple constitutional cases especially the S.R.Bommai case, Supreme Court has ruled that secularism forms the basic structure of the Indian Constitution. In the Ayodhya case also, the Court opined that the secular nature of India would form the basic structure of our Constitution, even if it hadn't been specifically mentioned in the Constitution. With the 42nd Amendment of the Constitution of India enacted in 1976, the Preamble to the Constitution asserted that India is a secular nation.

Secularism is the first and foremost doctrine that opposes all forms of inter-religious domination. Religion has its share of some deep-rooted problems. In religions such as Hinduism, some sections have been persistently discriminated against. Many religions are fragmented into sects, Which leads to frequent sectarian violence and persecution of dissenting minorities. This religious domination is known as inter-religious domination.

Detailed Solution

The share of the six minority religions in the country comprises about 20% of the population, of which Muslims are 14.2%, Christians 2.3%, Sikhs 1.7%, Buddhists 0.7%, Jain 0.4%, and Parsis 0.006%. A religious minority is a group of people that comprises less than half or 50 per cent of the total population of the country. Six religions in India have been awarded "National minority" status—Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, and Zoroastrians (Parsis). As a result, the people belonging to minority religions have been feeling neglected and deprived of opportunities available to the majority religious group. The majority religion in India is the Hindu religion which comprises about 80% of the total population of the country.
