Detailed Solution

India underwent a partition based on religious differences. When the British were to leave India, the country was partitioned based on religious differences, giving birth to a new country called Pakistan. The partition bred violence among the people on both sides of the border, leading to about 10 lakh deaths. Such a tenuous time was compounded by the air of uncertainty regarding the status of the princely states. The British had left the decision to join India or Pakistan to the rulers of the princely states. It made the task of the Constituent Assembly to express the aspiration of the country's people all the more difficult.
