Surat once had connections to both the eastern and western regions of India. With the assistance of Surat and, similarly, the red ports, trade has been made to function in the "middle and east" port countries. As a result, Surat operated as an Indian port for connections to the east before colonialism. Before the arrival of the British, India traded via the sea. The principal port on India's west coast, Surat, served as a conduit between the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea.
