Detailed Solution

India was the largest exporter of opium in the 1820s. With the development of industries in Europe, the export of manufactured goods from India declined. However, the export of raw materials increased rapidly. One such commodity was the export of opium. Opium constituted considerable exports to China. The British acquired huge profits by exporting opium to China from India. In return, they financed the tea imports to Britain from the profits of the opium trade. Many Indians were also involved in the opium trade. They earned huge profits that were utilised to establish industries in India.
