India was the single largest exporter of cotton textiles in the 1820s. The quality of Indian cotton textiles was better than in any other country. It was fine and smooth. The cotton textiles exported to European countries were known as “calicoes”. Indian cotton goods filled the European markets. Later, cotton textile industries were established in Bombay, Bengal, Dacca (present-day Bangladesh) etc. The cotton producers made lots of profit from its export.
