Indian and Chinese labourers worked as indentured labour in the 19th century. Indentured labour refers to the form of a labour system where labourers work for a fixed period under a contract to pay off their travel to new countries. The nineteenth century was marked by huge economic losses to the colonies such as India and China due to technological changes in the European nations. The peasants became jobless. They were unable to pay revenue which forced them to sell their lands and become landless. They could not find employment, forcing them to work as indentured labour in countries such as Guyana, Trinidad, etc.
