Indian Forest Service was set up in 1864.
Brandis understood that people needed to be educated in the science of conservation and that a proper system needed to be implemented to manage the forests. Legitimation for this system would be required. It was necessary to create guidelines for the usage of forest resources. Restricted grazing and tree-felling were needed to maintain wood to make lumber. Anyone who cut trees without adhering to the rules had to face the consequences. As a result, Brandis helped draft the Indian Forest Act of 1865 and established the Indian Forest Service in 1864. In Dehradun, the Imperial Forest Research Institute was founded in 1906. Scientific forestry was the name of the system they were teaching here. Ecologists and many others today believe this method is not scientific.
