 Indian National Congress was formed in 1884 by AO Hume, who was a retired civil servant. Hume published a notice calling for the assembly of the Indian National Union, which was to be held at Poona in December 1885. It was relocated to Bombay because of a cholera outbreak in Pune. Indian National congress's first session was held at Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College in Bombay under the presidency of WC Banerjee. 72 members attended this session from all over India.
