Indian National Congress is also popularly known as the Congress Party. It was founded in Bombay in the year 1885. Under Jawaharlal Nehru's guidance, the party tried to build India as a sovereign, secular, socialist, democratic, and republic. It remained in power till 1977. However, from 1980-1989 its support declined. The party supports secularism. It also takes welfare measures for the weaker sections and minorities. INC supports new economic reforms, which are necessary. It emerged as the largest party to win 145 seats in the 2004 elections. It also ruled as the United Progressive Alliance coalition government in the centre.
