Indigo could only be grown on fertile lands.
Fertile lands were hence densely populated. Only small plots scattered across the landscape were available for purchase. To cultivate indigo in plantations, planters required large areas in compact blocks. To get such land, they attempted to lease the land surrounding the indigo factory and evict the peasants. However, this always resulted in conflicts and tension. As a result, the indigo planters found it difficult to expand the area under nij cultivation.
