Initially, the Rashtrakutas were subordinate to the Chalukyas. However, Dantidurga, the leader of the Rashtrakutas, destroyed the Chalukyas and took control of Karnataka. With the aid of brahmins, he carried out the hiranya garbha ceremony necessary for becoming the monarch. Dantidurga was a member of a non-Kshatriya clan, but after completing the hiranya garbha ritual, it was thought that he had been reincarnated as a Kshatriya and was, therefore, qualified to hold the position of ruler.
