Inscriptions of dhamma were in Prakrit.
The messages associated with dhamma teachings were inscribed in Prakrit and written in Brahmi script. Ashoka was the most famous Mauryan Ruler. He was the first ruler who tried to take his message to the people through the scriptures. Ashoka got the message inscribed on rocks and pillars, instructing his officials to read his messages to those who could not read them themselves. Ashoka also sent messengers to spread the idea about dhamma to other lands like Greece, Syria, Egypt and Sri Lanka.
