Concept: Magnetic field lines are the paths that a north monopole would take if it were free to roam around on its own. In the vicinity of a magnet, these lines can be seen. They usually start at the north pole (N) , form continuous loops, and then end at the south pole (S) (S).
The density of these field lines is highest near the magnet's poles and decreases as one walks away from it. Around the poles, the magnetic effect reaches its maximum magnitude.
