Interneurons are also called association neurons. 

The interneurons are the mediators between the sensory neurons and the motor neurons as they bridge the communication chain between them. They are multipolar neurons located in the spinal cord and the brain. 

The interneuron sorts, interprets, or modifies the input from the receptor and sends an impulse to an efferent or motor neuron.
