Ionic compounds are formed by both losing and gaining electrons.
An ionic bond is formed between ions by gaining of electrons by non- metals and losing of electrons by metals to form an ionic compound, in order to complete their respective octets to become stable. For example: the bond present in the ionic compound NaCl is an ionic bond, where Na+ ion(2,8)  having one electron deficit gains one electron from Cl- ion(2,8,8) having one excess electron, to form an ionic bond between them.
