The Irish Potato Famine was a period of mass starvation and disease in Ireland from 1845 to 1849. It was a time of widespread sickness and malnutrition. Its significant impact on Irish culture and history as a whole. The worst year during that time was 1847, also referred to as "Black '47". One million people died from hunger and over a million fled the country during the famine. It resulted in a 20–25 % population decline overall and a 67% decline in some cities between 1841 and 1871. No less than 2.1 million people left Ireland between 1845 and 1855.
