Detailed Solution

Indian smelting industry was thriving before colonisation; smelters were using iron ores mined from woods, and ore was found on the Alluvial plains. The charcoal from the forest was also used to generate the energy required to smelt iron. The alluvial plains along the Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra produced more than enough ore for the early iron smelters. However, India's iron smelting industry was rapidly declining by the seventeenth century. Human access to forests was forbidden due to India's rigorous forest regulations. These regulations made it impossible for people to procure iron ore for ironmaking or wood for charcoal. In addition, people were subject to high taxes in places where the government allowed access to forests.
