It is true that a gomastha was a paid servant of the British East India company. Gomasthas was appointed by the British to collect supplies, supervise weavers, and determine the quality of cloth. In this manner, the British government tried to exert direct control over the weavers. However, clashes between gomasthas and weavers were soon reported as the gomasthas acted arrogantly, marched into villages and punished weavers for delayed supplies.
