By using a split ring commutator, an AC generator can be converted to a DC generator.
A slip ring commutator simply keeps the moving rotor connected to the stationary stator, whereas a split ring commutator causes the current to change direction every alternate half rotation. It essentially reverses the current direction in every half-cycle by changing the current direction every other half rotation. As a result, it converts an alternating current generator to a direct current generator. The AC generator's slip rings can be removed and replaced with split rings. The new AC generator uses concave magnets, which are then changed before the coil is removed and replaced with an armature. As a result, the AC generator will start working as a DC generator.
