Europeans started gaining power and control over the ports and trade in India. They secured several concessions from the courts and the right to trade with a monopoly. Then they shifted the trade from old ports like Surat and Hooghly, which the local merchants controlled, to newer ports like Bombay and Calcutta. As a result, the exports from the old ports fell massively, and the old trading businesses collapsed.
