Hence, as the altitude increases, the air becomes thinner or rarer, or lighter. Also, the air is matter and it’s usually attracted towards earth due to gravity. For this reason, air density is more at the earth's surface however it decreases as we go up and therefore air becomes thinner as we go to higher altitudes.
