An automatic fire alarm consists of a bimetallic strip with two metal strips, iron, and brass, enclosed together. Brass expands more than iron on heating. Therefore, the fire's heat causes the brass to bend towards the iron strip. The bending of the strip completes the electric circuit of the bell, and it starts ringing like a fire alarm. On cooling the strip, it returns to its original shape and breaks the circuit.
