Detailed Solution

The above statement is true.
When any substance is heated or cooled, a change occurs in them, either physical or chemical. On heating any substance, its shape changes because it expands, and this process is termed expansion. The shape changes when the substance cools down; it shrinks and is termed contraction. For example, a metal rim is fixed on the wooden wheel of a cart using the same property. When the metal rim is heated, it expands and becomes larger than the wheel. The rim fits easily on the wheel. Cold water is poured on the rim so that it contracts and fits perfectly on the wheel. Hence, an object expands on heating.
