Once the European companies secured numerous concessions from regional courts before winning the ability to trade with a monopoly, the traditional ports of Surat and Hooghly, where regional traders had conducted business, began to dwindle. Trade through Surat had a gross value of Rs 16 million in the final years of the seventeenth century. By the 1740s, it had fallen to Rs 3 million.
