  It is true that Bombay's first cotton mill was built in 1854. It was put into operation two years later. Some of India's first industries were set up between 1854-1874. Four mills with 94,000 spindles and 2,150 looms were in the process by 1862. Jute mills started to appear in Bengal at about the same period, with the first opening in 1855 and the second in 1862. In the 1860s, Kanpur saw the beginnings of the Elgin Mill, and a year later, Ahmedabad saw the construction of its first cotton mill. The Madras region's initial spinning and weaving mill started operating in 1874.
