Food grains and raw materials were exported from India to Britain. India, an exporter of finished hand-woven textiles and muslin, had been forced by the Britishers to import the finished goods from factory production. These mass-produced items were cheaper than hand-woven goods. In this way, Britain, which had a trade deficit with India before the Industrial period, had a trade surplus in the nineteenth century. Britain used this trade surplus to manage its deficit with other countries, which helped it to grow and prosper.
