Carbon dioxide and water vapour absorb infrared radiation coming to the Earth and partly reflect it back to the Earth's surface, due to which the Earth's surface gets heated up. This phenomenon is called the greenhouse effect. This is a naturally occurring phenomenon responsible for heating the Earth's surface and atmosphere. The greenhouse effect helps to maintain the temperature of the Earth. But when the amount and number of greenhouse gasses increase in the atmosphere, it results in a phenomenon known as global warming.
