Electroplating is done by using an anode, cathode and electrolyte. If we want to electroplate an iron sheet with copper, we need to use copper as an anode and an iron sheet as the cathode. The electrolyte should be a solution containing the metal that is supposed to be the coating. Here we need to electroplate the iron sheet with copper; thus, the anode will be copper, and copper sulphate solution can be taken as an electrolyte. Once the process starts, copper ions (cations) migrate from the copper sulphate solution towards the cathode (iron sheet), the negative terminal. These copper ions, deposited on the cathode, will form a fine coating layer. Copper ions lost from the copper sulphate solution are replaced with copper atoms from the anode (copper plate). Sulphate ions in the solution react with copper on the copper plate to form copper sulphate. The net result is that the concentration of the electrolyte (copper sulphate solution) remains the same.
