Because cotton is made up of pure cellulose. Nylon is a synthetic fibre made up of coal and water. It smells like plastic and melts upon burning, leaving dry and hard beads. Silk and wool smell like burning hair and burn very slowly. Silk leaves silvery beads, whereas wool leaves brown and shiny beads as a residue after burning.
