There are variations in rainfall that have given rise to variety in the lives of people. The Indian subcontinent depends on the monsoon for most of the rainfall. These monsoon winds enter India from the southern end and travel eastward and westward. During their course, the western branch of monsoons encounters the Western Ghats and causes rainfall. This leads to a decrease in its moisture content as it moves further into the plains. Similarly, the eastern branch loses most of its moisture when it reaches the Northern plains. This is why there is a difference in the amount of rainfall moving from east to west of the Northern plains.
