Earth is divided into seven large plates and several small plates. The theory that the earth's surface is made up of plates that move with respect to one another is called plate tectonics. Cracks in earth's crust are the place where tectonic plates meet. They occur where these tectonic plates are subducting, spreading, slipping, or colliding. As the plates grind together, they get trapped, and pressure builds up. Finally, the pressure between the plates is so high that they break loose. Depending on the pressure that has built up, the ground may shake slightly or shake forcefully.
