It is true that Gandhi stated eleven demands in his letter to Viceroy Irwin. Gandhi mentioned that if Irwin did not accept these demands by March 11, he would launch the Civil Disobedience Movement. The most stirring direction was to abolish the salt tax. Since Irwin wasn’t willing to make a concession, Gandhi started the Dandi March on March 12 1930, to break the salt law. Gandhi thought that if he launched a nationwide movement to abolish the salt law, it could unite the nation because salt was something essential consumed by the rich and poor.
