Gandhiji applied the method of Satyagraha in the Champaran district of Bihar. In South Africa, where he had used a novel strategy of mass agitation that he called Satyagraha, Mahatma Gandhi had successfully opposed the racist government. Gandhiji thought that a Satyagrahi might prevail in struggle through nonviolence without seeking revenge or being violent. Mahatma Gandhi used his satyagraha movement technique across India after his arrival. To motivate the locals to fight against the harsh plantation system, he travelled to Champaran in Bihar in 1916.
