The preceding claim is accurate. According to the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, there is a full or partial restriction on the hunting and trade of elephant products across India. Other creatures covered by this act include the Great Indian bustard, the snow leopard, the blackbuck, and others. In 1992, the Elephant Effort, a project to protect Indian elephants, was started. Since 1986, Asian elephants have been listed as threatened. This kind of hunting and trading is done largely to fill international demands as India doesn't have much market for such products. Around 80- 100 elephants are still killed every year. Due to the ban on ivory products in China (2018), the demand for ivory products has decreased.
