Photosynthesis mainly occurs in the leaves of plants. The leaves contain chloroplasts which contain chlorophyll, a pigment that absorbs light energy and converts it into chemical energy through the process of photosynthesis. In a pea plant, the stem is usually thin and has very limited chlorophyll compared to the leaves. Hence, photosynthesis mainly takes place in the leaves of a pea plant. While in the cactus plant, leaves are modified into spines, therefore photosynthesis takes place in the stem.
